According to researchers at Mandiant, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea’s (DPRK) Ministry of State Security (MSS) is the sponsor of parts of North Korea's cyber program. In particular, researchers link the MSS to the APT37 intrusion set.
The MSS is identified as the country's counterintelligence service, tasked with gathering intelligence against individuals and groups domestically and overseas. Potential targets include defectors, defector support agencies, and humanitarian organizations.
More widely, the organisation is reportedly also responsible for human rights abuses and a brutal secret police force.
