In early December 2023 pro-Iran hacking group, Cyber Av3ngers, targeted a water system in County Mayo, Ireland, causing a two-day water outage for about 160 households.
The attack exploited a vulnerability in a programmable logic controller (PLC) made by Unitronics, an Israeli manufactured unit commonly used in the water sector. The attack was part of a global campaign and not specific to Ireland.
According to reporting, the Irish government's National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) subsequently identified all vulnerable equipment within Ireland and notified the owners.
